The South East Zonal Coordinator of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Chief Benard Ezema, has issued a strong warning to all stakeholders in the sports sector—government officials, coaches, administrators, and sports enthusiasts—against exploiting their influence for personal gain in competitions.

Chief Ezema made these remarks during a courtesy visit by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Enugu State chapter, on Thursday at his office, located at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.

He reiterated the commission’s commitment to fostering sports development across Nigeria, with a particular focus on the South East region. Expressing concerns about the current state of sports in Enugu and the surrounding areas, he highlighted the urgent need to address the aging athlete population and stressed the importance of discovering and nurturing new talents.

“I am pleased to welcome you all. Your visit comes at a crucial time, and I recognize SWAN as an important partner in the growth of sports in our region. While we faced numerous challenges during the recent elimination rounds, I remain optimistic about future collaborations with SWAN,” Ezema remarked.

He emphasized that the primary mandate of the NSC is not just about competition but about the sustained development of sports, which requires concerted effort and partnership from all stakeholders. He pledged to work closely with SWAN and other key players to enhance the sports landscape in the South East.

“The current crop of athletes is aging, and there is a noticeable lack of emerging talent to take their place. It is time we change the narrative and ensure the future of sports in the South East,” he said.

Earlier, SWAN Chairman, Gideon Iwueke, welcomed Chief Ezema to the South East and stressed the importance of collaboration between all stakeholders in promoting sports development. He emphasized that the visit was a step toward fostering a more cooperative environment to further the growth of sports in the state.

Iwueke also expressed regret over the exclusion of the Sports Writers Association in certain sports-related activities within Enugu State by some agencies.
