Workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) have suspended their strike following a closed-door meeting with the Federal Government in Abuja.

The industrial action, which disrupted flight operations nationwide for two days, was called off after the intervention of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

NiMET staff had downed tools to protest poor working conditions, including the non-implementation of the national minimum wage, exclusion of some employees from approved allowances, and neglect of essential training programs.

The meeting to resolve the crisis was attended by the Director General of NiMET, officials of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and representatives of major aviation unions such as the National Union of Transport Employees, Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees, Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, and the National Union of Air Transport Employees.

The strike had caused severe disruption at major airports, including Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja and Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, leaving passengers stranded and flights delayed.

With the strike now suspended, normalcy is expected to return to domestic flight operations, while negotiations continue toward meeting the workers’ demands.
