The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and resilient in the face of increasing climate variability and extreme weather events across the country.
The warning was issued on Tuesday during a one-day sensitisation forum held in Abuja for journalists and civil society organisations. The event aimed to enhance collaboration between NiMet and key stakeholders in order to improve public access to timely and accurate weather information.
NiMet’s Director-General, Professor Charles Anosike, in his opening remarks, emphasised the importance of accurate forecasts and effective communication in protecting lives and property. He noted that while the agency is committed to delivering precise meteorological data, the media plays a strategic role in translating scientific information into actionable guidance for the public.
“Our goal is to have a better informed, better prepared and more resilient populace,” Anosike said, stressing that successful weather forecasting must go hand in hand with robust public communication and stakeholder engagement.
He also highlighted recent efforts by the agency to improve service delivery, including enhanced staff training and welfare.
Director of the Weather Forecasting Services, Professor Vincent Weli, reiterated the importance of weather and climate information in daily life, adding that the media remains a critical partner in ensuring that the public stays informed and safe.
“The media is our bridge to the people,” Weli stated, urging journalists to continue playing their vital role in disseminating accurate and timely weather updates.
The forum served as a platform to strengthen existing partnerships with journalists and civil society groups, equipping them with the tools and knowledge necessary to effectively communicate weather-related risks and early warnings to Nigerians.
