The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has officially confirmed that it met the March 28, 2025 deadline for submitting its Expression of Interest to bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
While this marks an important milestone, Nigeria can only proceed to submit a formal bid once it secures full backing from the federal government.
Nigeria previously vied to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games but lost to Glasgow.
This new bid aims to bring the Games to Abuja, the nation’s capital, and is seen as a chance to highlight Nigeria’s development strides, boost its global profile, and revitalize its sports culture.
According to a statement by NOC spokesman Tony Nezianya, “Nigeria’s experience hosting the 2003 African Games in Abuja laid a strong foundation. We are confident in our capacity to deliver a world-class event, with the necessary infrastructure, logistics, and hospitality.”
Hosting the Games, the statement added, would offer a powerful narrative of Nigeria’s progress and preparedness on the international stage.
The next edition of the Commonwealth Games is scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from March 17 to 29, 2026. Originally awarded to Australia’s Victoria state, the event was relocated after the local government withdrew due to escalating costs.
