The BakareBridge Foundation, a nonprofit organisation has impressed on children and parents the value of good education for a better future.
Three mentors from the foundation, addressed children and parents of the underserved community of Orita-Aperin and its surroundings, in Ibadan during the 2022 edition of its annual “Bringing Class to the Class” program, theme – “The Future Starts Now.”
The mentors were aware of how poverty and illiteracy reduced the standard of living in such communities.
They also went into great detail about how raising children in impoverished communities can be improved through parenting and education.
In her advice to the kids, Ms. Oluwatoyin Aiyedun, one of the mentors and the Group Managing Director of Fusion Group, said;
“The heights that great men reached and maintained was not reached by sudden flight, but by burning the midnight candle on their studies, when their peers were busy sleeping and snoring.”
Prince Adegboyega Sanni, a retired Comptroller of the Nigerian Custom Service, shared a few thoughts with the kids, he said;
“knowledge is good, but power comes from application of knowledge.”
Mrs. Olufunmike Adepoju, a retired secondary school principal who also spoke with the kids, warned about “the mentality of living fake lives.”
The foundation, which started operating in 2013, has prioritized the general wellbeing and educational growth of kids, especially girls, in underserved low-income neighborhoods that are known for their high rates of crime, violence, poverty, maternal and infant mortality.
The foundation promised to continue its annual free six-month comprehensive classes for students of the poor communities who are preparing for NECO/WAEC as well as UTME as efforts to improve the quality of education in the country.
