Host nation Morocco continued their impressive campaign at the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, defeating South Africa 3-1 on Thursday evening in Mohammedia to book their place in the semi-finals.
Roared on by a lively crowd at the Stade El Bachir, the Atlas Cubs delivered a clinical performance, with standout striker Ziyad Baha netting twice in a dominant second half. The sides went into halftime with Morocco narrowly ahead, courtesy of a 13th-minute goal from Ismail El Aoud, who pounced on a rebound to smash home from close range.
South Africa, however, showed grit and resilience. After weathering Morocco’s early pressure, the Amajimbos equalized in the 54th minute through Neo Bohloko, who rose brilliantly to head in a pinpoint cross from Emile Witbooi.
But the hosts wasted no time reclaiming control. Just two minutes after conceding, Baha restored Morocco’s lead with a sharp finish off a headed pass from El Aoud. The forward struck again in the 62nd minute, coolly slotting home a through ball from Abdellah Ouazane to make it 3-1.
From then on, Morocco managed the match with impressive composure. Their defense stayed disciplined, repelling South Africa’s advances while continuing to threaten on the break through Baha, El Aoud, and Belmokhtar.
Goalkeeper Chouaib Bellaarouch played a key role in preserving the lead, pulling off crucial saves to deny Oageng Lebesane and Witbooi in the closing stages.
South Africa made several attacking substitutions in search of a way back, but Morocco’s physical presence and tactical organization proved too strong to break down.
With this victory, Morocco becomes the second team to secure a semi-final spot, joining Burkina Faso, who earlier dismantled Zambia 6-1.
As the tournament enters its final stages, Morocco’s mix of attacking firepower and defensive discipline makes them a serious contender for the U-17 AFCON title on home soil.
