Six members of Sri Lanka’s armed forces were killed on Friday when a military helicopter crashed into the Maduru Oya reservoir during a training mission, according to an Air Force official.

The Bell 212 helicopter was carrying 12 personnel as part of a grappling exercise linked to an upcoming military passing-out parade when it went down in central Sri Lanka.

Air Force spokesman Group Captain Eranda Geeganage confirmed that four special forces operatives and two Air Force gunners died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The cause of the incident has not yet been determined, and the Air Force has withheld further comment pending the outcome of an investigation.
