Governor Chukwuma Soludo has emerged as the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025. He was the sole contestant during the party’s primary election, held on Saturday at the Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka.
The results were announced by the returning officer, Uche Nwegbo, who stated: “The total number of delegates for this election is 3,260, with 3,175 delegates accredited. A total of 3,172 votes were cast, with four invalid votes.
The governor secured 3,168 yes-votes, with no no-votes recorded. In accordance with INEC guidelines and the powers vested in me as the chief returning officer, I hereby declare Prof. Chukwuma Soludo as the APGA candidate.”
In his acceptance speech, Soludo expressed gratitude for the nomination and pledged to continue working hard for the party and the people of Anambra State. He stated, “Our party has grown stronger over time. We are the first registered progressive party in Nigeria, and APGA is now part of Anambra’s identity. Anambra is APGA, and APGA is Anambra.”
Soludo acknowledged the historic show of solidarity from the party members and reaffirmed his commitment to progressive leadership, saying, “I am deeply humbled by this overwhelming support, and I wholeheartedly accept this nomination. Anambra has continued to rise with the leadership we’ve provided through APGA, and I will continue to honor this responsibility.”
He further emphasized the peaceful and orderly nature of the election, commending the INEC observers and party members for their cooperation. “In 2021, Anambra chose me, and I’ve worked tirelessly to ensure that we don’t disappoint. We’ve achieved so much without borrowing, and we will continue to build on that foundation,” Soludo noted.
Soludo also shared his appreciation for the support of various groups, including captains of industry and market women, who have contributed to his campaign. “The consensus we’ve achieved across political parties is unprecedented in Anambra State,” he added.
Reaffirming his commitment to the people, Soludo said, “When I took office, I promised not to let Anambra, my supporters, my family, or APGA down. We are working 24/7 to keep that promise. We aim to win all 21 local governments, all 326 wards, and even every polling unit in the state. We’re determined to make a statement.”
In a final announcement, the governor revealed his running mate for the election, renominating Dr. Onyeka Ibezim as his deputy. “In 2017, I delivered a lecture titled ‘If it is not broken, why mend it?’ It became quite popular. Today, I say again: I’m renominating Dr. Ibezim as my deputy. If it’s not broken, why fix it?” Soludo declared, stressing that the journey had only just begun.
