Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, on Friday joined prominent Nigerians at the funeral of Chief Dubem Onyia, former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, describing him as a towering figure whose life left a lasting impact.
Speaking during the funeral mass held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Ngwo, and presided over by the Catholic Bishop of Enugu, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, Governor Mbah eulogized the late Onyia as a man of great influence and character.
“We are gathered here today to honour a legendary figure, a moral beacon, and a man whose shoulders lifted many to success,” Mbah said. “Sir Dubem Onyia lived an inspiring life. His light touched many, and the void left by his passing will be difficult to fill. Let us take comfort in the legacy he leaves behind.”
He urged Onyia’s family and loved ones to find hope in the promise of eternal life, adding, “We are not hopeless. May his soul continue to rest in peace.”
In his homily, Very Rev. Fr. Franklin Eze emphasized the importance of living a meaningful life, describing the funeral mass as a moment for reflection. He praised Onyia for his enduring contributions across political, religious, and social spheres, distinguishing him as a selfless hero.
The ceremony drew a host of dignitaries, including Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi; former governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo, and his wife Patricia; former governors Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia) and Senator Sam Egwu (Ebonyi); Senate Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu; and Chairman of the National Burial Committee, Senator Ben Obi, among others.
