The Federal Government has announced the early completion of repair works on the runway of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, and will reopen the facility on Monday, April 28, 2025.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made the announcement on Sunday, stating that the repairs were completed well ahead of the earlier scheduled reopening date of May 6.
“Dear compatriots, we worked extra hard to meet the deadline we gave on the repair of the runway of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu and finished way ahead of schedule. It will now be open for use as from tomorrow (the 28th of April, 2025),” Keyamo posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had temporarily closed the airport on April 19 to allow for critical maintenance work after a significant rupture was discovered on a section of the runway.
In a statement, FAAN explained that the emergency repairs were necessary to ensure the safety of passengers and aircraft operations, and were initially slated to last from April 22 to May 6, 2025.
“As part of FAAN’s commitment to passenger safety and the modernization of airport facilities, the runway was closed to landings and takeoffs during the rehabilitation period,” the statement said.
With the early completion, normal flight operations are now set to resume ahead of schedule, restoring air travel activities in the South-East region.
