The federal government has launched the BisonFly Project, a centralized and technology-enabled system aimed at reducing the cost of air travel across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
The initiative, unveiled on Thursday by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, is designed to streamline and optimize official travel through a digital platform that leverages bulk booking and discounted rates.
According to a statement by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Mohammed Manga, the project will incorporate digital booking tools and centralized systems to enhance transparency and efficiency in the management of official travel. The system is expected to become operational in the coming months.
Speaking at the inauguration of the project team in Abuja, Edun described BisonFly as a strategic cost-saving initiative developed by the Federal Ministry of Finance. He noted that it aligns with the federal government’s drive for prudent financial management and institutional reform.
“By coordinating travel and securing discounted rates, we are using the government’s collective bargaining power to cut expenditure and improve service delivery, just as global institutions like the World Bank have done successfully,” Edun said.
He charged the implementation team with the responsibility of ensuring the successful rollout and measurable impact of the initiative.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Special Duties at the Ministry, Raymond Omachi, commended the minister’s leadership and described the project as a model of fiscal responsibility for the public service.
Developed by the Ministry’s Efficiency Unit in collaboration with ICT advisers and other stakeholders, the BisonFly Project is expected to contribute to greater accountability and operational efficiency across the federal civil service.
Edun emphasized that the initiative represents a major step towards achieving fiscal discipline and enhancing service delivery within the public sector.
