The federal government has assured residents and visitors in Abuja of their safety, following a security advisory issued by the United States Embassy restricting non-official travel by its staff and their families to military sites and government facilities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the assurance in a statement on Monday, stressing that the FCT remains safe and secure.

“While the federal government recognises and respects the right of foreign missions, including the U.S. Embassy, to issue travel advisories to their citizens, it is important to state categorically that Abuja remains safe for citizens, residents, and visitors alike,” the minister said.

Idris highlighted the proactive efforts of Nigerian security agencies, noting that they are working round-the-clock to ensure the safety of all inhabitants of the FCT and the country at large.

He added that current security measures in the capital have yielded significant success in detecting, preventing, and neutralising threats.

“We understand that the U.S. advisory is based on general global developments and does not reflect any imminent or specific threat within the FCT. However, we reiterate to all diplomatic missions, investors, development partners, and the general public that there is no cause for alarm,” he said.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining Abuja’s status as one of the most secure capital cities in the world, Idris stated that intelligence and security agencies are closely monitoring developments and are fully prepared to respond swiftly to any threats.

He urged residents to go about their lawful activities without fear, while remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
