Former Ryanair pilot, Brendan O’Meara, has been remanded in custody in Ireland after being charged in connection with the seizure of over €10 million worth of herbal cannabis.
O’Meara, 62, of An Tulach, Summer Hill, Meelick, County Clare, was brought before a special sitting of the Ennis District Court on Saturday. He faces charges of possession of a controlled drug and possession for the purpose of sale or supply, following a major drugs operation at his residence on 7 May.
A bail application submitted by his solicitor was denied, after Gardaí objected on the grounds that O’Meara poses a “high flight risk.” A Garda officer told the court that the accused could potentially abscond and disclosed that further, more serious charges may be brought against him as investigations continue.
Judge Marie Keane upheld the prosecution’s concerns and denied bail, ordering that O’Meara be remanded in custody. He is expected to appear again before the court via video link on 14 May.
