Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has reaffirmed the state’s readiness to host the 2026 National Sports Festival, welcoming athletes and visitors from across Nigeria.

Speaking at his investiture as President of the Enugu Sports Club, as well as the commissioning of the remodeled clubhouse and installation of new club patrons over the weekend, Mbah revealed that his administration is committed to upgrading key sporting facilities, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and the Games Village in Awgu. The goal, he said, is to not only prepare for the festival but also enhance sports development in the state.

The governor emphasized that the investment in sporting infrastructure is part of a broader economic strategy aimed at expanding Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion, attracting over three million tourists, and creating thousands of jobs for the youth.

“We are going to give our stadium a brand-new look, which will include facilities for aquatic sports,” Mbah stated. “In addition, the Awgu Sports and Games Village will be revamped to ensure it is ready for the festival.”

He also highlighted the ongoing transformation of the state’s transportation system, designed to complement this vision by improving accessibility and mobility for visitors and residents.

Mbah commended the Enugu Sports Club for its strategic partnership with his administration, stressing that the government’s policies, programs, and projects align with the promises he made during his 2023 election campaign.

“The last time I visited this facility was during the governorship campaign. I outlined a bold vision to transform Enugu into a thriving economy and reposition it as a premier destination for business and leisure,” he said. “Since assuming office, our policies and projects have remained consistent with that pledge. The massive road infrastructure revamp across Enugu metropolis and local governments reflects our commitment to ensuring zero tolerance for unpaved roads.”

The governor also underscored the administration’s achievements in increasing the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR) through technology-driven reforms, plugging revenue leakages, and revitalizing dormant assets. He expressed optimism that the state would surpass its projected IGR target of ₦600 billion for 2025, which would fund transformative capital projects aimed at poverty eradication and improving the living standards of the people.

Addressing concerns about taxation, Mbah clarified that his administration had not increased taxes but had instead expanded the tax base, sealed revenue loopholes, and revived underutilized assets to boost economic growth.

“Our goal to eradicate poverty is reinforced as we steadily revive once-moribund industries through an influx of investments,” he added. “This revenue growth allows us to make significant interventions across all sectors, including education, healthcare, and water supply, demonstrating our commitment to putting the people at the center of governance.”

The governor also acknowledged the historical significance of the Enugu Sports Club, which has played a vital role in the state’s development since its establishment in 1929.

“Enugu Sports Club holds an institutional status, with its membership coveted by the elite in society. Its history is deeply intertwined with that of Enugu, dating back to 1929, the same year Enugu became the capital of Nigeria’s Southern Province. This investiture is, therefore, a remarkable honor,” Mbah noted.

He commended the outgoing chairman, Sir Victor Atuonwu, and his executive team for successfully remodeling the clubhouse, promising continued government support for the club’s efforts in promoting recreation, social cohesion, and community well-being.

In his remarks, Atuonwu lauded the governor for his support in upgrading the club’s facilities, ensuring their transformation into modern, world-class standards.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were former Enugu State Governor, Mr. Sullivan Chime; former Minister of Information, Chief Nnia Nwodo; and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Bartho Okolo, among others.
