The Enugu State Government has pledged to immortalise the late football legend and former captain and coach of Rangers International and the Green Eagles of Nigeria, Chairman Christian Chukwu, who passed away on Saturday, April 12.
While visiting the family of the late icon at Trans-Ekulu, Enugu, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Lloyd Ikechukwu Ekweremadu, expressed deep sorrow over Chukwu’s passing and extended heartfelt condolences to his family.
According to Commissioner Ekweremadu, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah has directed the formation of a committee dedicated to immortalising Chairman Christian Chukwu, in recognition of his invaluable contributions to Nigeria and the Igbo nation, particularly for uplifting spirits after the civil war and bringing pride and glory to the country through football.
“Chairman Chukwu’s death has left a void that will be hard to fill. He was a source of inspiration to many through his dedicated service to Nigeria and his remarkable humility. The entire sports community is mourning,” Ekweremadu said.
Also speaking, the General Manager of Rangers Management Corporation, Barrister Amobi Ezeaku, reflected on his time working closely with the late Chukwu. He described him as humble, sincere, and fatherly, noting that Chukwu’s wisdom and guidance continued to inspire even after he left his role as General Manager.
“Governor Peter Mbah has always encouraged us to stay connected with former Rangers players, and we’ve done just that. Chairman Chukwu was celebrated even during his lifetime—his image is permanently displayed at the Rangers office. We will continue to honour him in death,” Ezeaku added.
He recalled a recent visit to Chukwu, where they discussed his health. “That day, he mentioned he was going to the hospital. We had no idea it would be our last conversation. At Rangers, we are committed to immortalising his legacy.”
