The Enugu State Government has unveiled plans to construct a 135.5-kilometre standard gauge rail line aimed at linking major cities in the South-East to the Onne Port in Rivers State.
State Commissioner for Transportation, Obi Ozor, disclosed the development during an interview on Enugu Kwenu, a programme aired on Afia TV on Friday. He described the proposed rail project as a key element of the state’s broader transportation strategy and economic vision.
According to Ozor, a feasibility study for the project has been completed, and the state is collaborating with the Nigerian Railway Corporation and Chinese companies. Discussions are ongoing with investors to secure the necessary funding.
“The rail line we’re building is state-owned and will span 135.5 kilometres. It will connect Enugu to major cities across the South-East, including Anambra through Ugwuoba, Ebonyi via Amechi Idodo, and Abia and Imo through a route from Nkanu West to Isiagu, extending all the way to Onne Port,” he said.
He emphasized that the project is central to Enugu’s plan to become a trade and export hub.
“Rail infrastructure is crucial for moving agro-commodities from their point of origin to ports for export. This will drive foreign exchange earnings and stimulate economic growth,” Ozor added.
The commissioner also highlighted the region’s untapped mineral resources, such as coal, which require efficient transport systems for exploitation and commercialisation.
The planned rail line will serve both passenger and freight needs. Ozor said it is expected to ease cargo movement across the South-East and reduce congestion at Lagos ports. It will also support the transport of goods from neighbouring states like Delta.
Part of the plan includes building a new market station at the Holy Ghost Transport Terminal in Enugu, which will handle both passenger and cargo traffic. The state also intends to establish a major inland container port for processing agricultural products from both the South-East and North-East regions.
While the Federal Government is extending its own rail network from Aba to Enugu within the next 24 months, Ozor clarified that Enugu’s project is independent and state-led, aligning with the government’s long-term economic development agenda.
