In the last two days, nine more Ebola cases have been confirmed in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, bringing the total number of known infections to 14.
Jane Ruth Aceng, the Minister of Health, confirmed this on Monday, October 24th.
The outbreak began in September in a rural area of central Uganda and spread to Kampala, a city of more than 1.6 million people, by a man who came from the Kassanda district to seek medical treatment and later died.
Aceng stated in a tweet that seven of the nine people who tested positive on Sunday, October 23rd were family members of the man who died and were from the Kampala neighborhood of Masanafu. Another is a nurse who treated the man and his wife in a private clinic.
She also mentioned a health worker who treated the man and his wife in a private clinic.
“Comrade Ugandans, let us be vigilant. “Report yourself if you have had contact or know of someone who has,” Aceng said in a tweet.
According to Emmanuel Ainebyoona, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, all patients in Kampala were isolated when they became symptomatic, reducing the possibility of them spreading the virus.
