Top Nigerian music icons Davido and Asa are set to thrill fans at the opening ceremony of the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2025, taking place today, Sunday, May 18, at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The ceremony, scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., marks the official kickoff of the much-anticipated sporting event. Organisers have promised a world-class spectacle featuring cultural displays, music, and entertainment designed to reflect the grandeur of the festival.
Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Hon. Bukola Olopade, said all was set for what he described as the most memorable opening ceremony in the festival’s history.
“This is our own Olympics, and everything from the competition to the organisation must reflect that global standard,” Olopade said. “The NSC and the Ogun State Government have worked tirelessly to deliver a world-class event.”
He expressed pride in Ogun State’s preparations, stating that the quality of the venue and facilities confirmed the promises made over the past two years.
“From the aesthetic appeal to the smooth coordination, including seamless accommodation and feeding arrangements, this festival is already setting a new benchmark,” he added.
While teasing surprises in the ceremony lineup, Olopade confirmed that Asa would open the show, while Davido would close the event. “I won’t give away too much, but viewers should stay glued to their screens. They’re about to witness an unforgettable opening ceremony,” he said.
