The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has congratulated Nigerians on the 32nd anniversary of June 12, describing the date as a powerful symbol of the nation’s shared commitment to democracy, freedom, and justice.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN said the legacy of the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election remains a beacon of hope and a reminder of Nigeria’s enduring democratic spirit.
“As we reflect on this journey, we urge all Nigerians to embrace unity, peace, and mutual respect. We must stand firm against religious intolerance and violence in all forms,” Okoh stated.
CAN called on the government to fulfill its responsibility to protect religious freedoms and ensure justice for victims of religious violence. It expressed concern over ongoing insecurity in the country, including insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping, urging urgent and sustained efforts to protect lives and property.
The Christian body stressed that good governance is fundamental to democracy and called for greater transparency and accountability at all levels. It also urged the government to address poverty, unemployment, and inequality through the effective use of Nigeria’s resources, as well as improved investment in infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
Highlighting the need for credible elections, CAN called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to strengthen its systems to build public trust and electoral integrity.
“In a true democracy, the rights to free speech, peaceful assembly, and press freedom must be upheld,” the statement read, while encouraging the government to engage citizens constructively and find inclusive solutions to national challenges.
As the nation commemorates June 12, CAN prayed for continued peace, unity, and progress, and called on all citizens to remain committed to building a just, inclusive, and prosperous Nigeria that honours the sacrifices of its democratic heroes.
