Brazil’s Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin, arrived in Abuja on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, for a three-day working visit aimed at deepening diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and Brazil. The visit is centred on the Second Session of the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM).

Alckmin, accompanied by his wife, Maria Lúcia Alckmin, was received at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by top Nigerian government officials. Those present included Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole; Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha; and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari.

The visit represents a key step in Nigeria’s South-South diplomacy and is expected to lead to the signing of over 30 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) across critical sectors. Areas of focus include defence cooperation, agricultural technology transfer, energy development, and cultural exchange.

Speaking during the reception, Senator Hadejia described the visit as “a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” emphasizing Brazil’s expertise in agribusiness, energy transition, and industrialization as valuable assets for Nigeria’s development goals.

“This dialogue mechanism represents our commitment to leveraging South-South partnerships that deliver tangible benefits to our citizens,” Hadejia stated.

The ongoing strategic dialogue is designed to enhance cooperation between the two countries, with a focus on inclusive development, sustainable economic growth, and technical collaboration.

Expected outcomes from the high-level talks include progress on reforms in agriculture, energy, and trade, while further strengthening long-standing bilateral relations between Nigeria and Brazil.
