The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has emphasized the need for members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to maintain physical, mental, and emotional fitness to meet the demands of military service and uphold national security.

General Musa made this known on Sunday during the closing ceremony of the First Edition of the CDS Armed Forces Inter-Service Archery Competition 2025. Represented by the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans (CDPP), Air Vice Marshal Sayo Olatunde, the CDS stressed that fitness is critical to overcoming terrorism and other emerging security threats.

He said the archery competition served not only as a platform for enhancing marksmanship but also as a trial and selection exercise for Nigeria’s Armed Forces team for upcoming national and international archery championships.

“The timing of this competition is apt, considering the diverse security challenges facing our country,” Musa said. “Beyond competition, events like this promote core military values such as integrity, precision, innovation, and excellence, all of which are essential for effective service delivery.”

Highlighting the importance of archery, General Musa described the sport as a discipline that demands concentration, perseverance, and fortitude — values that align closely with the military’s operational ethos.

Congratulating the medalists, he said their outstanding performances reflect their dedication, resilience, and talent.

Also speaking at the event, Director of Sports, Air Vice Marshal Nanjul Kumzhi, noted that the championship showcased the exceptional skills and camaraderie among personnel from the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force.

According to Kumzhi, a total of 60 participants competed, with the Nigerian Army emerging top with 20 medals — 14 gold, three silver, and three bronze. The Nigerian Navy followed with 14 medals — one gold, six silver, and seven bronze — while the Nigerian Air Force secured 13 medals — six silver and seven bronze.

The event concluded with a call to continue leveraging sports as a tool for building resilience, precision, and unity within the Armed Forces.
