Despite public outrage, Northern Christian leaders in the All Progressives Congress, APC, and Northern Muslim political leaders have agreed to support one of the presidential candidates in order to defeat the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket.
The Northern Christian leaders of the APC, led by Yakubu Dogara, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, agreed to focus on issues that unite them as a people rather than encouraging attacks on sensitive religious issues in the name of politics.
The decisions were stated in a communiqué jointly signed by Dogara and Mukhari Shagari, a former deputy governor of Sokoto State and ex-Minister of Water Resources during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, following a consultative meeting held in Abuja on Saturday.
A former governor of Adamawa State, Boni Haruna, was also there, as was a former governor of Kwara State, Abdulfattah Ahmed; an ex-Minister of Sports, Damishi Sango; Senator Idris Ahmed Umar; and two former deputy governors of Kogi State, Yomi Awoniyi and Simon Achuba.
