The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has commended the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON, FCIArb (UK), for what it described as unprecedented reforms and unwavering support for the revival of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
In a statement released on Sunday and signed by its Vice President, Allen Onyema, the AON hailed Keyamo’s leadership as transformative, crediting his tenure with breathing new life into an industry that has long suffered from neglect and inconsistent policies.
“Love him or hate him, believe it or not, Festus Keyamo is absolutely God-sent to Nigeria’s aviation industry,” the statement read, citing his proactive and hands-on approach since assuming office in August 2023.
The operators highlighted several milestones achieved under Keyamo’s leadership, notably the implementation of a five-point reform agenda focused on strengthening indigenous airlines. One of the key outcomes, they noted, is the forthcoming arrival of dry-leased aircraft by Nigerian operators—an initiative expected to reduce costs and boost fleet capacity.
“AON believes this Minister has repositioned Nigeria’s aviation and the country positively on the global stage,” the group stated, praising Keyamo’s political will and industry insight.
The AON also extended appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for what it called a “genius” appointment. “The appointment of Keyamo is one made right,” the group declared, applauding the administration for backing reforms that are addressing the sector’s long-standing challenges.
Unlike previous governments that were often critical of local airlines, the current administration, AON said, has opted for constructive support through practical solutions and strategic partnerships.
“We commend the Federal Government for seeking ways to address the capacity challenges faced by local airlines, rather than demonising them for lack of capacity—an ugly trend that marred the past. This new direction reflects true leadership and patriotic pragmatism,” the statement added.
The association reaffirmed its readiness to partner with the Ministry in building a safe, reliable, and globally competitive aviation industry for Nigeria.
