Angel Di Maria has confirmed he will not be returning to Benfica next season, following the club’s failure to clinch the Liga Portugal title.
Benfica drew 1-1 against Braga on Saturday, finishing the season two points behind league champions Sporting.
The 37-year-old Argentine, who retired from international football last year after earning 145 caps, has spent five seasons at Benfica across two stints. He returned to the club in 2023 after notable spells with Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus.
“It hurts a lot to end this way after such a long year. This was my last league match in this shirt, and I’m proud to have worn it once more,” Di Maria shared on Instagram.
He added, “There’s still a final on Sunday, and we’ll give everything we have to win it. As always, we’re united. Thank you for your support, Benfica fans.”
Benfica will face Sporting in the Portuguese Cup final on May 25, before beginning their FIFA Club World Cup campaign on June 16.
