The administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo has extended its anti-drug abuse campaign to the Amansea Cattle Market in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The campaign, driven by the Anambra State Ministry of Information in partnership with the Amansea Cattle Market leadership, targeted the predominantly young Hausa population at the market, some of whom are believed to be struggling with drug addiction.
Speaking during the event themed Operation Stop Drug Abuse and Addiction, Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, underscored the dangers of substance abuse and urged youths to channel their energy into productive ventures.
“The Ministry of Information initiated this programme in Amansea because the government is concerned about the wellbeing of youths here and across Anambra State,” Mefor said. “We intend to replicate this outreach in markets, churches, mosques, and other gathering places, ensuring no one can claim ignorance about the dangers of drug abuse.”
He warned that drug abuse could lead to financial ruin, impaired decision-making, and mental health issues, including schizophrenia. He further assured the youths that the Soludo administration was committed to their welfare and would support rehabilitation efforts for those seeking help.
“The cattle market community is a strategic partner to the Solution Government in the development of the state. I urge young people here to avoid drugs in order to live successful and meaningful lives,” he added.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Amansea Cattle Market, Alhaji Bello Magari, emphasized that drug abuse and addiction pose significant challenges across the country, noting that the campaign was necessary to sanitize the market community.
