Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as unconstitutional and a violation of the nation’s democratic principles.
Speaking at the 2025 Akinjide Adeosun Foundation’s (AAF) Leadership Colloquium and Awards in Lagos on Thursday, Amaechi denounced the declaration as “a defilement of the sacredness and sanctity of the constitution,” warning that such actions signal a dangerous erosion of the rule of law.
He also expressed concern over the award process for the ongoing coastal road project, questioning the transparency and legality of the contract. “If the rumours are true, and there was no due process, then it is pure arbitrariness. And arbitrariness is antithetical to the rule of law,” he said.
Amaechi further criticised the National Assembly, calling it “weak and ineffective.” He argued that the legislature and judiciary have been sidelined by the executive, resulting in unchecked presidential powers. “We no longer have three arms of government. The executive has become the judiciary and the legislature. The president sneezes, and everyone shakes,” he stated.
The former minister of transportation also urged citizens to demand accountability from leaders, asserting that responsible governance is built on the principles of separation of powers, rule of law, and due process. “You’re not just looking for fearless leadership — what you need is fearless followership. Nigerians must stand up and say: no more arbitrariness.”
Amaechi concluded by stressing that institutions must be strengthened to prevent the abuse of power, adding that the absence of an effective parliament and judiciary only leads to tyranny.
