Nigeria’s Flying Eagles clinched a spot in the semi-finals of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations with a dramatic 3-1 penalty shootout victory over defending champions Senegal, following a tense goalless draw after extra time at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia.
Having lost 1-0 to Senegal in the group stage of the previous tournament, Nigeria gained a measure of revenge with a composed and disciplined performance in Monday’s quarter-final showdown. The win also confirms their qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, set to take place later this year in Chile.
Head coach Aliyu Zubairu made two changes from the side that drew 2-2 with Kenya, bringing in Sulyman Olalekan Alabi and Bidemi Olalekan Amole in place of Kpangu and Cletus.
The Flying Eagles dominated the first half with smart movement, crisp passing, and fluid transitions. However, their wastefulness in front of goal kept the scoreline level. Divine Oliseh missed two clear chances, shooting weakly at the goalkeeper both times, while Kparobo Arierhi also failed to capitalize on opportunities.
As fatigue began to set in during the second half, the pace of the game slowed, allowing Senegal to gain more control. Nigeria continued to create chances, with Oliseh notably failing to convert a one-on-one in the 75th minute.
In extra time, Benjamin fired over the bar, and Arierhi’s long-range strike missed the target. Senegal came close through Serigne Diouf, whose header narrowly missed the mark. Substitute Tahir Maigana nearly broke the deadlock with a powerful shot, only to be denied by a superb save from Senegalese goalkeeper Pape Sissokho.
In the penalty shootout, Benjamin, Chukwu, and Ayuma calmly converted their efforts, while Nigerian goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt made two crucial saves to secure a 3-1 victory.
With this win, the Flying Eagles not only progress to the U-20 AFCON semi-finals but also earn their place at the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
