Activist Najaatu Muhammad has blamed the Nigerian government for the persistent killings in the Middle Belt, particularly in Plateau State.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Muhammad said the continuous attacks on defenseless residents highlight the government’s failure to fulfill its primary duty of protecting lives and property. Her comments follow the killing of over 100 people in the past two weeks by suspected armed groups in Bokkos and Bassa local government areas of Plateau State.
In response to the violence, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, also visited Plateau State on Tuesday. During his visit, the IGP vowed to ensure justice is served and the perpetrators are brought to book.
Accompanied by senior police officers, Egbetokun met with Governor Caleb Mutfwang at the Government House, where he expressed condolences to the government and people of the state. He condemned the attacks and assured that the police would work to de-escalate tensions and restore peace.
According to Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP held a strategy meeting with tactical commanders to review current security deployments. He also directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Kwazhi Dali Yakubu, to oversee security efforts aimed at restoring calm in the affected communities.
