Abia State has made history by securing first place in both the male and female categories of the National Under-15 Handball Championship in Nigeria, officially becoming the Junior National Champions for the first time.
In the Under-12 category, Team Sokoto delivered an outstanding performance to win the male division, while the female team from Benue State claimed victory in the female category, earning well-deserved prizes.
The national sporting event, held from March 18 to March 28, was organized by the Abia State Government in collaboration with the Handball Federation of Nigeria. A total of 20 states participated in the championship, which aimed to promote the development of handball in the country.
Speaking to journalists, the Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba—represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Cyril Nwaigwe—emphasized that the tournament fostered peace, love, and unity among Nigerians. He also highlighted its role in discovering future handball champions for Abia State and the nation.
Abia State Director of Sports, Obioma George, noted that Governor Alex Otti sponsored the championship as part of efforts to revive handball in the state.
Secretary-General of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, Monica O., praised the event, stating that it provided a significant boost to the development of handball in the country through the discovery of new talents.
Officials from Sokoto and Benue States also commended the Abia State Government for ensuring a well-organized tournament with top-notch security and quality facilities.
